10 Mistakes That Will Cause an Editor to Reject Your Short Story

Sat, 20 Apr 2024 14:00:00 GMT → Sat, 20 Apr 2024 16:00:00 GMT (d=2 hours, 0 seconds)

Join us for this special two-hour seminar led by Vita Poetica Co-Editor John Morris. We’ll take a look at the most common errors that apprentice fiction writers tend to make, using real-life (anonymous!) examples. Some of these pitfalls will be familiar if you’ve ever taken a creative writing workshop, while others will shed light on what journal editors especially want not to see in your submissions.

Then we’ll turn to practical tips that will help your short story stand out in the crowd. Can you use language that sings, startles, amuses? Or whispers quietly? Do you make full use of sensory details? Do you know how to treat your readers with respect, and anticipate what they want from your story?

This is an interactive class, and all short-story writers, whether new or experienced, are invited to join the discussion. Note: This seminar is not a workshop. You do not need to bring your own work, and we will not be reading or criticizing participants’ writing. But you'll get a lot more out of it if you bring your own questions and thoughts about short-story writing.

This event will be recorded, and all paid registrants will be able to access the recording. By registering for this course, you consent to be recorded. Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.
