The practice of compassion can be understood as the concern we hold for one’s well being, paired with the motivation to alleviate that person’s suffering. Compassion is a skill that can be trained and should be deliberately practiced in order for it to be sustained toward ourselves and others. In this webinar, we will explore how compassion, at a neurophysiological, behavioural and conceptual level, is a way of attending to ourselves and others that can promote emotion regulation, interpersonal connections and prosocial behaviour. Expanding on the DBT skill, ‘Loving-Kindness’, and drawing upon research and compassion literature, we will propose a practical framework for compassion as a skill to integrate in psychotherapy, to promote and serve the wellbeing of our clients and improve their relationships. All participants will receive a compassion handout, worksheet and meditation script to use with clients.
Participants will learn:
1) The supporting research literature and existing conceptual models of compassion.
2) Formal and informal compassion practices aimed at cultivating positive affect, emotion resilience, greater attunement and connection to others, and prosocial behaviors.
3) How to incorporate and teach compassion as a skill in psychotherapy to support emotion regulation and improve interpersonal functioning.
