This course, led by Patrice Baldwin, will explain how teachers can use drama to enable a class to actively engage with narrative poetry, in a meaningful and memorable way.

A range of drama strategies will be used, that can enable children to enter the fiction in role and to interactively explore the language, imagery, verses, characters, settings, key moments and themes contained within the poem. Ways in which narrative poems can be extended through drama, will also be suggested.

Teachers will be guided ‘step by step’, through at least one drama unit based on a narrative poem (or two units, if there is sufficient session time available), e.g. The Pied Piper of Hamelin, The Lady of Shallot, The Listeners, What Has Happened to Lulu?.

COST: £25 for 1 teacher to attend 1 session; £15 for each additional teacher to attend this session.

Patrice Baldwin was a primary headteacher, School Improvement and Art Education Adviser and Ofsted inspector. She was Sir Jim Rose’s Drama Editorial Expert for his proposed primary curriculum.

Patrice has given keynotes and led workshops in 35+ countries and was President of the International Drama Theatre and Education Association (2010-13) and Chair of National Drama for more than a decade (until 2015). She created and directed ‘Drama for Learning and Creativity’ (D4LC), an internationally acclaimed school improvement initiative.

Patrice is a published educational author and has been a BBC Education scriptwriter and series consultant (TV and Radio). She now works freelance.

Patrice Baldwin and Pie Corbett worked together termly over several years, developing Drama and Talk for Writing at their termly conferences.
