From the earliest days of European settlement, the majestic Hudson River Valley in New York State has been a seat of American political, financial, social, and artistic development. And over the centuries, everything from colonies and farms to estates and cities have popped up along this 150-mile stretch between New York City and the Adirondack Mountains. It's time to uncover this magical region and see how buildings and structures built over the past 400 years have interacted with the awe-inspiring landscapes.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the architecture along New York's Hudson River Valley, one of the oldest and most historically significant stretches in America known for its rich history, natural beauty, and cultural significance. In Part Two: The Hudson River School, we explore the studios and mansions throughout the Hudson River Valley that have connections to the nation's first arts movement led by American landscape painters.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- A discussion surrounding the American landscape painters who helped develop of the nation’s first arts movement
- The influence of writers such as Washington Irving on the Romantic Era
- The development of Hudson River Gothic as a reaction to the Neo-Classical period
- Whimsical Victorian styles of the post-Civil War period
- The rapidly growing river cities and their grand public and private architecture
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
