The BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) and the Women's Health Research Institute (WHRI) are collaborating to host a digital health research series.

On Thursday, May 16th, between 12:00 pm -1:00 pm, join us for an exciting rapid fire discussion about - In the Heart of Innovation: Exploring AI, Data Privacy and Policy in Healthcare.

Objectives:

1. Understanding the role of machine learning in data privacy within healthcare: Help attendees grasp the underlying principles and technologies behind AI applications in health. Examine the challenges and considerations associated with maintaining data privacy in machine learning models.
2. Identify best practices and encourage further research: Showcase successful research studies and PHSA policies that have implemented data security and privacy practices. Stimulate interest among seminar attendees to pursue research opportunities related to AI in healthcare and to potentially highlight areas where additional research is needed.
3. Inspire innovation: Motivate attendees to think creatively and explore new avenues for data applications in healthcare.

Main speakers:

Michael Coss, Director, Data governance, PHSA

Michael Coss is the Director of Data Governance at PHSA, focusing on creating and implementing a new framework for data sharing, access, and use. He has worked in public health informatics for over 25 years, spanning chronic disease, health promotion, and communicable disease, focusing on ways that technology and information management can improve health outcomes. The previous 10 years of his work was with the BC Centre for Disease Control where he led data management and analysis, data standards, and the governance of the Public Health Reporting Data Warehouse. There he was heavily involved with data analytics for two major public health emergencies, opioid overdose deaths and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. John-Jose Nunez, MD, MS

Dr. John-Jose Nunez is a clinical research fellow and psychiatrist at BC Cancer and UBC Mood Disorders. His research interests are in applying computational techniques such as artificial intelligence to help patients with mental illness and cancer. He completed his master's degree in computer science during residency, focusing on applying natural language processing to help cancer patients. His research was recently published in JAMA Network Open, and has garnered international media attention.

Dr. Lovedeep Gondara, MS PhD

Dr. Gondara is a Research Scientist, with specialization in machine learning and biostatistics at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). His research focus encompasses several areas within machine learning and biostatistics, including natural language processing, privacy-preserving machine learning, flexible survival regression models, Bayesian statistics, and their integration into the healthcare domain. Dr. Gondara also holds an adjunct appointment at the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia.
