Audio is a crucial part of any immersive experience. Although utilizing spatial audio has been common in the game and entertainment industries, design of sound is different in the field of enterprise-oriented XR products.
Spatial audio design is becoming a way to accurately aid users in navigation as well as providing an immersive user experience in single and multi-user settings.
Lecture Overview:
In this live session, we’ll be covering the basics of spatial audio design for XR beginning with an overview of the different techniques used and the best applications for them.
We’ll also briefly cover the workflows involved from concept to production in a typical application or game.
Then we’ll be critiquing submissions from students of the XR Design Fellowship on the earlier sound related assignments as well as answering questions from our participants.
Join us as we demystify the world of spatial audio in spatial computing and XR!
Session Takeaways
- Principles of XR Sound Design
- From Concept to Production of XR Design in typical XR App/Game Workflows
- Unity's Sound Capabilities
- Best Practices for Implementing Spatial Sound Design in Your XR environment
- Learn about the different ways that spatial and non-spatial audio can be used in games, experiences and apps and the basic workflow process involved.
Speakers
Scott Looney: Founder & CTO of The Game Audio Institute
Scott Looney is a passionate artist, soundsmith, educator, and curriculum developer who has been helping students understand the basic concepts and practices behind the creation of content for interactive media and games for over two decades. He pioneered interactive online audio courses for the Academy Of Art University, and has also designed and taught curriculum at UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, and Oregon State University. A co-author of books on game audio and music, he is also a founder of the Game Audio Institute, providing materials and curriculum to schools, teachers and students learning the art and craft of game audio. Diving into VR and XR for the last decade or more, he has also worked extensively with spatial audio and consulted for clients across a broad spectrum of award winning projects for VR snd XR devices including Leap Motion and the Magic Leap One. In addition to his work in game audio and education, he is currently researching AI, procedural and generative sound and music, XR interaction, and mastering the art of code.
Description of company
The Game Audio Institute is based on the educator's experience in the classroom over the last decade, where they have been developing curriculum and teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in game audio.
Interactive media is very different from linear media like film and TV. The current state of game audio education often glosses over this point completely. Game audio students and professionals alike, must understand what’s under the hood of a game engine. They must be able to speak the language of game design and implementation. They don’t have to be programmers, but they must have a general understanding of how games and interactive media work.
The goal of this institute is to educate a new generation of game audio professionals so that composers, sound designers, producers and professionals of all kinds to be familiar and comfortable with the very unique workflow associated with sound for games and interactive environments.
