Presentation Information:
Parking garages are an integral infrastructure asset. If handled correctly, the approach to maintenance of parking garages may be similar to a hand dealt from a deck of cards; each structure is unique and there are many options to evaluate. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of the proverbial cards in your parking garage “hand,” as well as the opponent’s (deterioration) “hand,” will put you in a better position to make the next move for your garage.
1. Understand the Cards: Learn the advantages and disadvantages of common parking garage structural systems, various methods of deterioration, and general description of repair options.
2. Understand the Opponent(s): Learn how harsh weather exposure, de-icers, and failing drainage systems contribute to corrosion of structural support systems.
3. Understand the Game: Learn the impact of investing in maintenance at various points in the structure lifecycle with respect to long-term cost implications, and how to maximize the effectiveness of your next repair project.
4. Understand the Strategy: Learn how to prioritize repairs of parking garage defects to maximize effectiveness, and how to budget for recurring repairs to extend the life of parking structures.
