Understanding Addiction in Autistic and ADHD clients

In this webinar, Liam Spicer will focus on the research, frameworks of understanding addiction, ways to differentiate and understand what an addictive behaviour is including busting neuronormative myths, and therapies and supports to use with addiction struggles. There will be a key focus on understanding addiction from the lens of trauma, dissociation, and attachment, and how addictive behaviours are often formed and maintained through existing in a world that is not built for Neurodivergent people. This will include understanding key areas such as The Minority Stress Model and will emphasise the importance of affirming approaches. The training will also aim to bust some myths about what addiction is based on neurotypical expectations and emphasise the positive role that some certain behaviours which can often be mislabelled as addiction such as gaming play in Autistic/ADHD clients lives. There will be a focus on adapting current addiction frameworks for Autistic and ADHD clients, skill development and strategies in working with addiction, and the importance of understanding an individual’s addictive behaviours from a wholistic perspective. Case examples and Q and A will also be included.
